Nobody asked. That was the problem.
In 9 AD, Roman general Publius Quinctilius Varus marched three full legions into the Teutoburg Forest on the advice of Arminius — a Germanic chieftain who had served in the Roman army, spoke Latin, held Roman citizenship, and had spent years planning exactly this. The ambush was total. Three legions — XVII, XVIII, XIX — were annihilated over three days. Rome never reused those numbers. Augustus, on hearing the news, reportedly beat his head against a wall and screamed for Varus to give him back his legions.
For those who know that the Rhine, not the Elbe, became Rome's final frontier — and why.
Printed on soft cotton. The forest, considerably less forgiving.
